A Spiritual Practice – Lectio for families
Many families have found themselves trying to juggle a whole new set of balls in their homes – working from home, school at home, church at home and just being at home altogether all the time. It has been near impossible to keep them all in the air and often it has been the faith formation and shared spiritual experiences that have fallen out completely.
Because life has changed so dramatically parents have been left with little energy in their tanks, and almost nothing if they are to think of doing something together as a family.
And then along came Lectio 365 and Lectio for Families.
While our family has not found the effects of the last few years quite as draining, the discovery of Lectio for Families was life-giving. This app takes the thinking out of leading, planning and preparing - all that’s required is the gathering of everyone together for 5-10 minutes with a phone. For our family, we have found the time during breakfast works well, but it would work at any time of the day that you are all together.
Lectio for Families provides a space for families to rest. It begins by taking a big breath – in and out – slowing down to focus and still our minds and bodies. It follows a simple P.R.A.Y pattern each day.
Pausing to be still.
Rejoicing with, and reflecting on, verses from the Bible.
Asking for God’s help.
Y saying YES to God’s ways.
On Sundays, there is a special Sabbath prayer, and occasional pauses of the regular pattern to celebrate heroes of the Christian faith.
We have enjoyed the continuity of a bible verse that is repeated each day. By the end of the week, we can safely tuck some more of God’s treasured words deep in our hearts. We write this verse up on our blackboard to remind us throughout our week of God’s words for us.
The Lectio for Families app has been designed for families with children aged between 7-11 years old but is certainly suitable for those who are younger and slightly older too. The pause for discussion about the question of the day has started many wonderful conversations around our table.
On any given day you will hear various adults and children who are part of the 24-7 Prayer movement around the world sharing their thoughts, reading God’s word, and praying together.
A highly recommended resource for your family.
